Exercises will have positive affect on our joints, muscles and nerves. โ€œExercise is Medecineโ€ 5. Losing weight will help to decrease the load and stress on our joints especially of the hips and knees. This will help to decrease inflammation of these joints. 6. Scoliosis is an abnormal lateral curve of the spine. The mid and lower back are the most common areas affected. Often scoliosis is diagnosed in childhood or early adolescence but may develop and worsen with aging. Signs of scoliosis may include: -Tops of the shoulder are uneven -One shoulder blade is more prominent than the other -One hip sits higher than the other -When bending forward, one side of the rib cage is higher than the other -The head is not centred over the pelvis -The entire body leans to one side -Waist level is uneven Scoliosis is either idiopathic (developed with time and no known cause), congenital (caused from birth) and neuromuscular (secondary to neurologic or muscular disease). At Meridian Spine & Joint, our physiotherapists will provide scoliosis-specific exercises that are often beneficial to stabilize, stop or slow progression and correct non-structural changes. We believe that exercises and specialized physiotherapy techniques help improve posture, and mobility and enhance quality of life. Risks of tendonitis include repetitive motion of the shoulder, overhead movements, underlying arthritis, poor posture, underlying joint stiffness, and muscle weakness. Tendonitis can affect any of the tendons of the shoulder. Most often the rotator cuff tendons are affected. Our physiotherapists at Meridian Spine & Joint, are experts in assessing the shoulder complex. We will determine if you are suffering from tendonitis and which tendons are affected. Following your assessment, we will guide you through a specific rehabilitation program to assist you on the road to recovery. Call us at (519) 471-7900 and we will book you in today!

This lovely weather has made us all anxious to get outdoors to swing the racquet or golf club๏ฟฝ. Golf and tennis are two sports that require strong grip and wrist/forearm muscles. Pain may be due to poor mechanics of the sport, repetitive strain, over use and weakness of the forearm muscles. Tennis elbow is the term for pain on the outside of the elbow. Pain with gripping and lifting the wrist and fingers upward, especially with the elbow straight, is often reported. Tenderness will be noted on the outside of the elbow. It is called tennis elbow because gripping the racquet and holding the wrist in the extended position to contact the ball in tennis can cause pain. Many people develop these symptoms without playing tennis. Key boarding, writing and manual work can cause this pain. Golferโ€™s elbow is associated with gripping and bending the wrist and fingers upward. This is the position you need to hold the golf club. Pain is felt on the inside of the elbow and tenderness is often reported. However, like in tennis elbow, many people develop this condition without playing golf. Lifting weights, manual work and repetitive gripping and flexing the wrist may cause this pain. At Meridian Spine & Joint Physiotherapy, our clinicians have worked with many people that have developed tennis or golfers elbow. We will complete a detailed assessment to determine the cause of the pain and develop an individualized treatment plan guided by your personal goals. Call us today at (519) 471-7900 to see one of our physiotherapists and/or massage therapists and get back in the game! #meridianspineandjointphysio #physiotherapy #tenniselbow #golferselbow Image Sources: RWmassagetherapy.ca @acucare_pain_rehab_centre @schaefit_

We all know that if we do not use our muscles they get weaker and smaller or atrophy. As we age, we can lose strength of our muscles with inactivity. A study showed the quadriceps (front of thigh) muscle cross section on MRI effects from exercise. For the high level athlete (triathlete) the muscle was shown to be lean with very little fat tissue. If we are sedentary and do not exercise our muscles will be smaller with more fatty tissue. However even as we age, as long as we are physically active our muscles can remain strong as shown in the diagram. It doesnโ€™t matter if you are a fit young athlete, someone that has not exercised, or an older person looking to build your strength, we can help. At Meridian Spine & Joint, our physiotherapists will work with you to develop and maintain strong muscles. We will assess your needs and develop an individualized program that is right for you. #meridianspineandjointphysio #physiotherapy #musculoskeletal #musculoskeletalpain #physiotherapytreatment Pain is often challenging and difficult to manage. It may come on quickly (acute) or be present for several months/years (chronic). Musculoskeletal pain can be influenced by the amount of tissue damage, past experiences, fear, anxiety, stress, lack of sleep, and habits. The pain may come from one area but felt or referred to another area of the body. The amount of pain a person experiences may not correlate with the amount of tissue damage. All of this can affect our perception and how we manage the pain. Ultimately it will affect us physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. Osteoarthritis of the knee is a very common condition that many people develop over time. Through wear and tear the joint will deteriorate with decreased joint space, breakdown of the cartilage covering the bone in the knee joint, and bony irregularities such as spurs and osteophytes may develop. All of these changes will cause pain, decreased mobility, and joint swelling. As with all joints, it is better to keep moving as much as you are able to tolerate. Often fear will lead to decreased activity. In turn, you will have less strength and increased pain. Some patients will also have the feeling of instability which will lead to fear of movement, avoidance of activities, and poor function. The most common is degenerative disc, which is part of natural aging of the spine. At Meridian, we know that exercise is an important component of rehabilitation and prevention of chronic back pain. Physiotherapy can help to assess the cause of musculoskeletal pain, best practice treatment and help to alleviate the pain and manage it properly. Meridian Spine & Joint physiotherapists will work with you to: - assess your knee joint - educate you to understand your condition and alleviate your fears -provide you with the tools to decrease your pain and increase your strength -help you return to your regular activities Contact Meridian Spine & Joint at (519)471-7900 to book with one of our experienced physiotherapists and get started today! #meridianspineandjointphysio #physiotherapy #osteoarthritis #osteoarthritis #osteoarthritisknee (Image - Netmeds.com)
